geographical information science is the emerging discipline combining geographical science , surveying and mapping, remote sensing, spatial science, environmental science, computer and network science, etc together, which has gone deep into almost all realms of social and economic life. the department of geographical information science was founded in 2005, which has the undergraduate major of geographical information science, two masters’ degree authorization points of mapping and geographical information system and regional economics. there are more than 170 students in this department at present while there are 11 faculty members in the department, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 4 lecturers and 2 teaching assistants. student of this department are cultivated to have the fundamental theories and knowledge and application skills of gis, remote sensing, surveying and mapping and cartography. graduates of this department have a wider choice for jobs and can do geo-information relevant management, application, research and development work in urban construction, land, environment, traffic, population, statistics, government, military, trade departments, state oriented enterprises, it corporations, information centers and research institutions the department of geographical information science gives full play to the integration and comprehension among different disciplines. the main disciplinary directions are basic theory research and application on the core of cartography, remote sensing and surveying and mapping, etc, and gis application on the core of spatial data processing, secondary development and gis designing, etc. the research fields are land resources, electric power, ecology, environment and urban-rural planning, etc. the research areas are more broaden from home to abroad. especially, the researches based on the situation of yunnan province extended themselves to the whole southeast asian countries, and formed the regional features and specialized characteristics, which laid the solid foundation for the double first-rate specialty construction. undergraduate major of geographical information system: this major cultivates students with basic theory, fundamental knowledge and basic skills who can engage in scientific researches and teaching in research institutions and universities. graduating students can manage to do gis related application research, technology development, production management and administrative management in the fields of urban planning, regional planning, natural resources, environment, traffic, population, housing, land resources, infrastructures and planning management, etc. students of this major are required to obtain fundamental theory and basic knowledge of gis, cartography, remote sensing and computer science, etc. graduates of this department have a wider choice for jobs and can do geo-information relevant management, application, research and development work in urban construction, land, environment, traffic, population, statistics, government, military, trade departments, state oriented enterprises, it corporations, information centers and research institutions. in recent three years, graduating students succeeded in matriculation to masters in the chinese academy of science, tsinghua university, peking university, wuhan university, chinese eastern normal university, nanjing university, nanjing normal university and yunnan university, etc. the graduate employment rate in recent years kept stably more than 95% while the rate of postgraduate entrance examination reached or exceeded 40%. masters’ degree on cartography and gis: the main research directions are method and application of remote sensing, mountain ecosystem information system, metallogenic prognosis with gis and integrated information, digital region and digital city spatial information system and spatial data mining, etc. masters’ degree on regional economics: the main research directions are geo-economy and international regional economic cooperation, regional multiculturalism and diversified economy, montanic economy and rural development, regional tourism development and planning, enterprise location selection and regional market, and regional population, resources, environment and sustainable development, etc. the cultivation of postgraduates is combined with the scientific research tasks, which shows the emphasis on cultivating students to be capable of doing scientific researches independently. in recent years, teachers in this department undertook many national natural science foundation projects, yunnan provincial natural science foundation projects, and social service projects like land planning, land valuation, remote sensing monitoring of alternative planting of poppy abroad and power grid information system, etc. the accumulated research funding was up to more than 8 million yuan. |
